Allied interview from Touch and Go 21. Band interviewed by Tesco Vee after their show at the 9:30 club.
The Allied were:
THE ALLIED were interviewed sometime in December during their recent visit to the nation's capital...
TV: So fill me in how the scene is in Detroit now that I'm out of touch...
Doug: It's getting better now, there's like more new bands like the DISPLACED and FATE UNKNOWN, both great bands...there's a new band called the AFFILIATED are going to be really good..it's like the same faces at every show, there's like not that many new people coming.
Pete: At last night's show there were alot of new really young kids.
TV: But you don't see alot of the people from the Freezer days?
Bud: The reason alot of the people don't go now is because the Clubhouse doesn't have a name like the Freezer did, so I guess the clubhouse isn't popular enough, which is a stupid reason not to go to a show...
TV: So none of the new bands never get to play the city club?
Pete: The City Club ain't booking hardcore shows lately, they ware getting labeled as a hardcore club so alot of their new wave people wouldnt come.
Doug: They book a big show like Discharge on a Thursday night and they wonder why people don't come, you know? So they say we're not making any money off those bands so we're not going to book them.
Mick: They don't even give any local bands like a Friday or Saturday, night.
Bud: The only other bar giving bands a chance is Paychecks.
TV: So is there alot of fights still?
Doug: Alot of that has died down, like sure some drunk asshole comes along and starts somathing then yeah, there'll be a fight...then there's this stuff putting down the people into Oi! in the midwest now saying they're trying to break up the scene and all that stuff.
TV: Ya and I suppose I'm as guilty as anyone about spreading that (in reference to some comments made in Forced Exposure, I was talking shit to label and discredit the actions of a few on one particular night...yes I said things I shouldn't have, and if I stepped on anybody's Doc Martins please accept my apologies, ED)
Pete: Alot of those kids are really diehards and go to every show.
Doug: They pay for every show, they put out magazines.
TV: So what happened as far as personnel changes?
Pete: Rob Michaels was singing for us...
Doug: At first we started out with me on vocals and this guy named Spike on bass, but he was more interested in going out with this girl than practicing, so we sacked him, and I decided I wanted to go back to bass playing so we got Rob (ex of Bored Youth, ED) and the band was going again but then we found out Rob was going to college...so he goes off to college in Ann Arbor and leaves us with nothing, so I decided to go back to singing and--
Bud: Mick came to the rescue...
TV: So, are you planning on recording and putting out a record?
Pete: Ruthless Records wants to us out on their label...we're recording a demo with David Rice 2 weeks from now...
TV: So you would lay claim to an English influence overall as far as songwriting and such?
Doug: It's just that me and Pete, that's mostly the kind of music we listen to, and when we write it comes through in our music.
Pete: We've never tried to write a song and make it sound English
(talk here about the progressions of the scene in Detroit from the Bookies/Nunzios stage through the Freezer and on to the Clubhouse)
Pete: The Clubhouse is great for new bands, like there was a show in Friday and there was like 6 new bands...
(discussion here concerns Chicago and the difference betwaen the over and under 18 crowds...)Doug: I said something like "Chicago doesn't deserve the EFFIGIES" and this chick and this guy overheard me and bitched...
TV: When a band gets to a certain point it seems the young kids always find cause to write them off..tsk..tsk...
